Campbell initially enlisted in the militia with the service number V81913, before discharge and enlistment in the 2nd AIF. He embarked for the Middle East serving with Headquarters, 2/5 Battalion and was promoted to the rank of Corporal. Corporal Campbell was wounded in action in Syria and died of these wounds on 12 July 1941, aged 26.
