Notes |
- In 1909, Clarices' father, Fred decided to take the children and go to Western Australia. However, it seems that young Frederick Duncan who had known no mother but his grandmother refused to leave. He lay down on the train platform and his father and two sisters had to leave without him. They travelled in the train to Melbourne and then on the ship "Dimboola" to Geraldton. On arriving in Geraldton Fred approached a man on the wharf and asked him if he would look after Clarice who was then only 8. The man went home and asked his wife who agreed. So for 10 to 12 years Clarice was brought up by the Bells. Dad Bell was a Plummer in Post Office Lane; Clarice, made the seventh child, Illma lived separately and worked in a bakehouse for the Brayshaws. Fred suffered from asthma, so left Geraldton and travelled north to find work.
Clarice remembers playing in the snow at Daysford, Victoria and being sick and frightened on the ship that brought her, her father and Illma to Geraldton Western Australia. Clarice learned to play the piano by ear. She is still alive in 1992. (The Tucker Family in Australia, 1992)
