He was educated at Warnertown School (7years) and Port Pirie High School (3years). Leaving school in 1933 he worked on his uncle's farm which later became his own; he carried out mixed farming. He inherited the family love of cricket and played Country Cricket for 22 seasons. He was a good bowler and batsmen. His two sons Ray and Brian are also keen cricketers. jack has played in Country Cricket Carnivals in Adelaide with his brothers Tom and Gordon from 1939 to 1970 in the Grace Plains Team. During the years 1968, 1969 and 1970 his two sons Ray and Brian were also in the team and they continued on until 1991. He also played tennis and cricket for Warnertown until the local teams folded and then he played for Port Germein in the Port Pirie A Grade competition until he was 52. He is still living on his farm at Warnertown and together with two married sons as farmers has expanded to several other neighbouring farms. he is a support of the Warnertown Uniting Church.
