    • John Hamilton Summers first tried to Enlist in the AIF in 1914 but was rejected as he was suffering from Brights Disease. Brights Disease is an inflammation of the Kidneys.
      His second attempt to enlist in the AIF on the 8th October 1916 was successful. he became a Gunner in 5th Field Artillery Battery. His official Service Number was N57068. He was discribes as being 21 years old, 5ft 9ins tall, chest measurements of 32/36 inches, fresh complexion, Blue Eyes, Brown Hair. His Religion is Church of England. Distinctive Marks large scar back left upper leg moles on shoulders.
      On 8th March 1916 he was marched into the 5th Field Artillery Battery 12th Reinforcements. On 1st December 1916 he was transferred to 4 DAC 10th Reinforcements. on 13 January 1917 the was transferred to 75h Field Artillery Battery 10th Reinforcements and remained with them until 25 Jun 1917.
      On 25 Jun 1917 he was Discharged after qualifying as a Pilot in the newly formed Flying Corps.
      He Joined 44 Squadron Royal Flying Corps and was stationed at Hainault Farm in Essex England. The Squadron were tasked to protect England and particularly London from the threatened Zeppelin and Gotha raids. The Squadron was equipped with the new Sopwith Camel fighter which operated out of Hainault Farm aerodrome in Essex. John was promoted to 2nd Leut on 26th June 1917

    John enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force on 14 Sep 1921. He was to remain in the air force until he discharged on 15 May 1946.
