 | Charge of False Pretences - Charles Jackson Campbell Charles Jackson Campbell came before the Water Police court on Thursday 15 November 1906 on a charge of having obtained 9 pound 4 shillings and 5 pence from William George Reid on November 6 last by fale pretences. Detectives darlington and Vincent arrested him. It was stated in evidence that the accused took an office in George Street, where were stored many samples of all kinds of hardware, tiles, fencing wire etc and Reid, attracted by the prices advertised, became a customer. He gave Campbell an order for 116 sheets of Galvanised iron, 7ob of screws and 4lb of washers, which came to the amount named, and were duly paid for. Delivery was to be taken the following day, but when the prosecutor repaired to the office he was put off with and excuse. He came again, but Campbell was not there. Vincent was there, however, and seeing Reid, asked him his business, explaining at the same time his own. Hence the present prosecution. A letter was received by Reid from the accused, who was in Darlinghurs Gaol, and who promised to send along the iron as soon as he got out. He was committed for trial.
