Royal Hospital for Women, Paddington, New South Wales (1919)
Royal Hospital for Women, Paddington, New South Wales (1919)
The Royal Hospital for Women’s history dates back to 1866; when the Benevolent Society established the first lying-in hospital in New South Wales. The hospital originally provided care to poor married women during pregnancy, labour and after the birth of their baby.
In 1901 The Benevolent Society purchased the ‘Flinton’ estate for £14,000 for the establishment of a new lying-in hospital for women. The original farmhouse was used as a temporary hospital for up to 36 patients. In 1903 plans for the construction of a permanent Hospital for Women on the grounds at Paddington were drawn up by The Benevolent Society's Honorary Architect George Sydney Jones. The Society sought Royal patronage and was granted the title 'Royal' to the hospital. On 3 May 1905 the new Royal Hospital for Women was officially opened by Lady Northcote, wife of the Governor General.
In 1992 the Benevolent Society withdrew from the management of the Royal Hospital for Women. The Hospital became incorporated into the Eastern Sydney Area Health Service and was later relocated to a new site in Randwick.
