A syndicate of Adelaide medical practitioners established Ru Rua Hospital as a private

hospital in 1909, on the corner of Pennington Terra

ce and Sir Edwin Smith Avenue at

The Avenues. This property was eventually sold to Memorial Hospital and Ru Rua

relocated to Barton Terrace, North Adelaide, in August 1920 in properties owned by

Walter Hunter Stevenson.

Three of the original medical syndicate, Drs Arthur Cudmore, Henry Newland and Thomas Wilson, were joined by Drs Bronte Smeaton, James Bonnin, Edgar Brown and

Constantine Trent Champion de Crespigny. Ru Rua Hospital ran as a private hospital

until 1973 when it was bought by the South Australian Government. It has now been

converted for residential use.

Dr C.G. Wilson, one of the surviving directors of Ru Rua Hospital donated its records to

the Mortlock Library in 1992.
