    • Hurtle Stafford Cavanagh, 25, was found dead about eight miles from Balaklava. Hurtle was share-farming with Mr A. E. J. Smyth of Salters Springs. He had spent the week-end at Balaklava, and left on Monday morning with a horse, dog and rifle, for Salter's Springs. He said that he intended to shoot a rabbit for the dog. He did not arrive as expected, and later a search party, including Messrs Clem and Archie Tiller, and G and B. P. Read, found Hurtles body. His feet were entangled in a loose fence. Hurtle was shot through the forehead. The dog was beside the body and the horse was still tied to a fence. [1, 2]
