Notes |
- Lilly was probably born at Warnertown. She would have attended the school there and would have known Charles from the time she was 4 and he was 8 as their farms were next door to each other. They probably attended the same church. Her sister, Ethel, was engaged to Charles' brother, Sidney, and they probably went out as a foursome many times. When Sidney fell sick and died just before Ethel's intended wedding it would have been devastating for all of them. Lilly's and Charles' young lives were affected by the deaths of many close family members; Charles' father died when Charles was only 9, his grandmother Elizabeth Henley died when he was 10, probably while living with them. A baby brother, Alfred Ernest, had also died at 6 months. Lilly's father died five years before she married. He sister Rosanna died when Lilly's own children were only small but she raised on of Rosanna's sons, Stan, until his father could re-establish the family. As a young woman, Lilly liked to dress well but she never enjoyed housework. She spent her later years living alternately with her sons. Her name is spelt differently on her marriage certificate from her death certificate, as "lily" and "Lilly". We have used the latter throughout.
