  • Notes
    • Rita Martha Bottcher is the 10th Child of Wilhelm & Wilhelmina Bottcher (n.Dahn). She was born 18 November 1900 at 1 Crown Street St Peters, New South Wales, Australia. She liked to spell her name Reita.
Rita was three years old when her mother died and Eight years old when her father Wilhelm remarried.
When she was 10, Rita was sent to Bathurst for a holiday, to stay with the family of her father's new wife Adelaide. She remembered that everyone was celebrating when there was a little rain. Her father Wilhelm hardly recognized her when she came back, as he had put on weight and had rosy cheeks.
Prior to her marriage she lived at her sister Minni's place at 97 Denison St Newtown, who remarried in 1923 to Robert Houston. That is where she met Nils Isaksen a food friend of Robert.
Rita worked as a waitress and then for Harry Small, in his chocolate factory. Minnie and Albert were very close to Rita, as they were the youngest in the family. All through their lives they kept in close contact.
Rita at age we, married Nils Isaksen - aged 32, at St Stephens Church of England, Newtown on 1st of March 1924. Which was four days before her sister Minnie gave birth to jean Rita Houston. The witness to their marriage was Robert Houston, Minnie's second husband of less than a year. After their marriage, they lived just across from Minnie and Robert, at 100 Denison St Newtown. This is where young Nils was born in December 1924 and June in November 19267. In the 1930, during the depression years, Rita remained at home caring for her niece jean and her own children. A close bond developed between all of them.
In 1931, when June was 5 yrs, Rita, Nils and the children moved to Margate St Ramsgate. From there they moved to Torwood Street and later to Harris St Sans Souci, where they shared a large brick house with Minnie and Robert Houston. At this stage, Robert and Minnie had just moved from Newtown. The home at Harris St was close to St George Motor Boat Club, that was an interest to both Nils and Robert.
Around 1942 they lived at 54 Carroll St, just 2 doors from Rudolph Bottcher, who lived at 38. At this time there was a Chinese market garden across the road.
They decided it was time to get their own house after the land lady increased the rent following Nils fixing up the Verandah.
In June 1946, when young Nils came home from the Air Force, uncle Jack (John Burcher) helped them get their dream home at 46 Toyer Ave Sans Souci.
Rita was a lovely lady who was devoted to her family. When Minnie's daughter Beryl died in 1942, Rita took 6 weeks old Verlie and cared for her.
I have been told that she also cared for her sister Minnie in December 1964 and Brother Rudolph in December 1974 prior to their deaths from cancer.
I have fond memories of going to Rita and Nils house at Toyer Ave with my wife Julie on numerous visits. Rita and Nils always made us welcome. Rita use to say "she now has two John & Julies" (referring to her grand daughter Julie Piggott and her husband John McEwan)and Nils use to take me down to his shed and show me "his Navy" (at the time I was in the Royal Australia Navy), his sailing boats that he had lovingly built. They were very special people and we miss them dearly.
Rita moved to Yagoona Nursing Home around 1989, to be closer to her daughter June. She was taken to Lidcombe Hospital shortly before May 1993, where she died on 26th May, aged 92. She was a kind and loving lady, the family miss her dearly. We are told she was very much like her mother, Wilhelmina.
