Mudgee newspaper & mining register 1/3/1859 ?Death from the bite of a centipede ? on Tuesday 22nd Feb. A man named Milton, living about 20 miles from Mudgee was bitten on the wrist whilst loading a dray with shingles. On Sunday evening Dr Ramsay was sent for, and on arriving found the patient in a state of collapse. Inflammation had extended along the arm to the shoulder, and thence to the chest and abdomen. Murl attended Primary School at Milcowie Dam (half way between Warnertown and Crystal Brook) for 12 months and then the Warnertown Primary School until grade 7, where she was taught by Mr Bus. Her hobbies were ballroom dancing, needlework and gardening. As a child she helped her father train the trotting horses at Delemere farm where he had made a trotting track. She rode to school. She learned art, needlework, dressmaking and studied the piano and steel guitar as a teenager. Murl's father died when she was 17; this left her mother and her to run the family farm.
Murl worked for a while in Adelaide at Woodlands Grammar School, and at the Barrier Hotel and Central Hotel in Port Pirie, as a housemaid, but spent most of her life working on the farm at Warnertown.
Murl has been an attendant at 10 weddings, nine times as a bridesmaid and once as a matron-of-honour. Other highlights that Murl remembers well are a joy flight with Kingsford Smith in the "Southern Cross" airplane for 10 shillings around 1930, and a trip on the ship "Moonta" doing the Gulf Trip from Port Pirie to Port Augusta to Whyalla to Port Lincoln to Adelaide. She came home by train as she was too sea sick. Her Uncle, William Dow, Married to Ethel Hawkins, was Headmaster at Hummocky Hill (now Whyalla) and they made many trips across the Gulf in the small cargo/passenger ship called the "Nelshaby" to visit them.
After Thier marriage Murl and Jim honeymooned in Kangaroo Island. Jim worked on the farm for the first 7 years and then left to be employed by the Commonwealth Railways (now Australian National) until his retirement at 60. In 1960 Murl and Jim bought a house in Port Pirie so that they could be closer to his employment. The farm was being worked by share-farmers until it was sold in 1964 to neighbour and relation Alex Johns.

Murray was born at the home of his aunt Lou Coulls, on a very hot day 106 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade), weighing only 4 pounds. He attended the Croydon Primary School and the Junior Technical High School at Croydon. As a child he suffered ear problems and remembers vividly his mother warming peroxide and pouring it into his ears, hoping to ease the pain with her home medicines. Murray enjoyed playing cricket and football, and now enjoys a game of golf. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in 1944 and after the war resumed his employment with W. Eglinton Ltd until his retirement in 1988, having worked his way up to the position of Works Manager. His main hobbies have been gardening and bird-breeding, and building a holiday home at Ardrossan, South Australia.

Septuagenarian Celebrates
One of Balaklava's oldest and most esteemed residents passed his70th milestone on Tuesday last, 23rd June, 1931. Mr. W. tiller, who for over 25 years has been known and respected in this district, does not look his age, and still takes an active interest in Agricultural, church and Sporting matters. His residence on Tuesday last was thronged with relatives, sons, daughters, grandchildren, nephew, a brother Mr. George Tiller of Adelaide, and a sister Mrs. Evans and last but not least his only remaining uncle Mr John Tiller of Prospect who for all his 80 odd years keeps a youthful outlook on things modern. Mr Tiller's birthdays are always celebrated with a family reunion, but this being a special occasion, the previous anniversaries of his birth were significantly eclipsed. The midday meal had an attendance of 57 people, while the tea table's share was 41. The groaning boards were daintily decorated with blue iris and maiden hair fern. Unbeknown to Mr Tiller a party had been arranged for the evening, and his surprise when he greeted some 200 guests at the residence of his son, Mr Stan Tiller, was undoubtedly an agreeable one. Throughout the evening congratulations and wishes of "Many happy returns of the day, Sir!" were showered upon the guest. The barn had been gaily decorated with blue and orange streamers for the occasion and dancing commenced, and items and cards were indulged in with Liersch and Bowmans (members of the Angel Family) providing excellent music on the accordion and other instruments. Misses E. Wilson and L. Belling acted as M.C.s. A right royal supper was provided in another part of the building, and at the conclusion of this important part of the festivities Messrs. H. Curtis and H. Masters spoke. Mr. Curtis, on behalf of the residents of the district, mentioned that he had known Mr. Tiller for a great many years. Mr Tiller's father settled in the Woodlands district 36 years ago, when most of the country was virgin soil. When he was a young man he took land on his own account, and exactly 25 years ago purchased a portion of the Weocata Estate. He married Miss Edlington of Hoyleton in 1882, and reared a family of 7 sons and 4 daughters. All his sons have followed their father's example and 'gone on the land' and the training given them in their youth has made their name a byword wherever farming matters are spoken of, especially in connection with the breeding of draught horses. He mentioned that Mr. Tiller had been a councillor in the Balaklava and Hall districts councils for some years. He also mentioned that in his opinion Mrs. Tiller's sympathy and support had much to do with her husband's success; in most cases it was the woman who kept her man up to the mark, and Mrs. Tiller, he was sure, had done her share. In conclusion, he tendered the guest of the evening his heartiest congratulations.
Mr. H Masters, President of the Balaklava and Dalkey Agricultural Society, spoke on behalf of the society and the cricketing public of the district, he believed that Mr. Tiller was a foundation member of the society and informed his listeners that it was through Mr. Tiller's efforts that the Sheep Dog Trials had been inaugurated here some years ago. The speaker had played cricket with and against Mr. Tiller on many occasions and would even now as soon play under his umpiring as any others. Although he had not known Mr. Tiller as long as had Mr. Curtis, he thought he knew him well, and he was a man for whom he had the greatest admiration. Mr Tiller replied, thanking speakers for their remarks, then the ceremony of lighting 70 candles on the big birthday cake, made by Miss Ada Tiller and decorated by Mrs W Hoepner was performed. These were extinguished in 3 puffs by Mr. Tiller; his lung power does not seem to have diminished with his age. Dancing was then resumed and the party broke up about 2 A.M. Golden Wedding Tiller - Edlington
On October 16th, 1882 at the residence of the Brides parents, at Hoyleton, William, son of the late William and Mary Tiller, was married to Thirza, youngest daughter of the late Robert and Ann Edlington, all of Hoyleton. The ceremony performed by the late Rev. Stephen Wellington, Sunday last, 16th October, was the 50th Anniversary of the wedding and to celebrate the occasion the members of the family gave them a dinner and tea at their home. The midday meal was served at 1 PM. The first sitting was composed of the sons and daughters, sisters, brother-in-law and uncle of the bride and bridegroom and also the minister of the Balaklava Methodist Church, Rev Jasper Gilding. The grand-daughters did their duty by attending to their grandparents' wants and wishes. The table decorations were carried out in gold and white. Gold horseshoes, true lovers' knots and swastikas were prominent and golden ranunculi broom and roses were used, The table napkins were also gold and white. A 3-tiered wedding cake, decorated in the same colours occupied the centre of the table, The top decoration of the cake was first used on the occasion of the wedding of Mrs Edgar Wilson (daughter of the bride and groom). As mementos of the event each daughter received one of the gold pillars which supported the top storey of the cake and each son a peppermint with the figure 50 printed thereon in gold. Gold bows were arranged on the chairs of the bride and groom. Mrs Tiller carried dainty posies of golden flowers, which were given to her by Mrs. Evans (Mr tiller's sister and her bridesmaid) and Mrs. Furniss (her sister) while Mr. Tiller wore a gold rose in his lapel. Rev Jasper Gilding, in a short bright speech proposed the toast of "Our Parents" to which Mr. Tiller responded "for they are Jolly Good Fellows" was then sung by all, and afterwards a move was made to the drawing room, where Rev. Gilding was on behalf of the family, presented the bride and groom each with an upholstered armchair. The wedding cake, too, was a gift, from the same quarter. Congratulations were showered upon the happy couple from Balaklava and surrounding districts and from Crystal Brook and Adelaide. Those present included ....Mrs. Gilding was unable to be present owing to the illness of her daughter, Joyce.... In 6 months Mr and Mrs Archie Tiller have attended the wedding of Mrs. Archie Tiller's sister (Mrs G Broster). Nils Died in a boating accident. He had just purchased a boat in the Port Hacking River in the south of Sydney and decided to sail it around to Botany Bay and then up the Georges River to his home. The seas were rough and he was warned that it was dangerous but decided to go anyway. It appears that his boat was Blown onto the Jibbon Bombora which is off shore near Bundeena at the head of the Port Hacking River. Nils Morgan Isaksen is the son of Isak (Syvert) Isaksen and Anna Neilson and was born 10 Feb 1892 at Tonsberg, Norway. His father Isak was employed as a Sheriff and his Mother Anna nationality prior to her marriage was Swedish. Nils had a sister Named Thelma living in Norway.
Nils left home when he was about thirteen to work on a whaling boat, but after a number of years eventually jumped ship.
He arrived in Australia from London in May 1913 aboard the ?rvieto"and disembarked at the port of Sydney,he was 21 years old. (Stat. Dec - signed by him in December 1926).
In his early married life Nils worked as a black smith striker, but later on he was employed at Mack el Raiths Baths foundry on Botany Road, Sydney, enameling baths. His brother - in - law and good friend Robert Houston was also employed here.
Nils had a Norwegian Friend, Svansen, who was a foreman working on the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Svansen gave jobs to Nils, Robert Houston , James Ramsey and Wilhelm Bottcher.
On 9 December 1926 at the age of 35, Nils applied for the Certificate of Naturalization and was Naturalized on the 2 Mar 1927. On the statutory Declaration it is indicated that he was 6 ft tall, had dark hair and brown eyse. He was living at 100 Denison Street Newtown and was employed as an Enameler with K.F.B. Foundry Ltd at Waterloo for a period of two years.
During the depression years, Nils with others would take a rowing boat to the upper reaches of the Georges River and cut fire wood and then sell it by the bag.
He made a mechanized saw to cut the wood (an engineer friend told him it wouldn't work, but it was successful). while using the saw, Nils cut the tip off his little finger, he wrapped his hand in a towel and set off to the doctors. At the doctors he refused an analgesic and the doctor said, if he could withstand pain for a severed finger he could stand the pain for any operation. He could reject pain.
His hobby, was constructing sailing boats. He and his son Nils, constructed sailing boats out of cedar and sailed them on Botany Bay and Sydney Harbour. They had a lot of experience between them. Their workshop was well equipped with tools and a forge. Nils also built model boats.
He loved the soup and sardine sandwiches that his wife Rita made for him. He smoked a pipe in his early years.
Nils kept in touch with his family in Norway until the 2nd World war, but then lost contact. He would have liked to visit them, but never did. He never lost his accent or his interest in his home land.
Twelve months before he died, he said he was saving his money to take Rita back to Norway for a visit, but he never made it.
Nils died at hospital on 31 March 1983, aged 91. At the time he was residing at 45 Toyer Ave, Sans Souci. Just one month after his good friend and brother in law Robert Houston. Nils William Isaksen is the first born child of Nils Morgan Isaksen and Rita Martha Bottcher. He was born on 2 December 1924 in Newtown, New South Wales, Australia. From an early age he was an adventurer and showed no fear. In his early years they moved to Sans Sousi and at the age of 7 he sail alone,out on Botany Bay.
On one occasion he got into trouble and received a belting for building a make shift boat out of galvanized iron and cement and with the help o9f his friends took it down to the Bay.
For recreation he sailed on Botany Bay and occasionally performed in Fencing Tournaments and displays, in which he made some of his own equipment. There was an article in the Women's Day, pages 6 & 7, dated 4 July 1949, where his name, is mentioned.
On the 6 April 1943, at the age of 18, Nils enlisted in the Royal Australian Airforce and went to Townsville for training.
He was 5'11" tall, medium complexion with brown eyes. On his Service record, it shows his other special qualifications were "Fire fighting, Ju Jitzu and French".
He states his occupation as boat building with his father and livng near Botany Bay, in his hear he would like to have joined the Navy, but apparently "there were more men than ships". At the time of his enlistment he lived at 54 Carroll St Kogarah whith his parents.
He went through a special training Unit and a selection process to find what he was best suited for. He joined the 549 Squadron, that was attached to the British RAF. Nils had a few months with this unit and upon additional training was transferred to 26th Repair and Servicing Unit and served in the Pacific region, at Noemfoor, one of the Biak Islands in Papua Province. During the war against the Japanese, at various times both the Japanese and the allied Forces operated major air bases from this site.
In April 1945 he was transferred to Morotai where he served for approx five months.
From Jan 1946 he was transferred to 200 Flight. 200 Flight was a top secret unit involved in the final year of WWW. Due to the secrecy of the tasks, personnel were forbidden to speak about their duties.
This was a specialist flight who flew in Dakota Aircraft (which were the work horses of the Air Force) that had been equipped with the then State of the Art Radio Detection equipment. They were used during the Borneo Campaign in 1945 to locate Japanese communication centres.
The RAAF 200 Flight was equipped with six heavily modified Liberator aircraft. It was tasked with the insertion & supply of intelligence gathering parties behind Japanese Lines in Borneo and Timor, and at the time dropping supplies and ammunition in order to assist these and other operatives. The Liberators achievements were remarkable, considering the size of the unit and the period in which they were operational. The Unit had three aircraft shot down.
In February, 1946 Nils was transferred to 21st Squadron. This squadron re-equipped with Liberators, converted to heavy bomber role and saw action as a fighter & Dive bomber. They to dropped supplies on Borneo and Morotai. Flew Liberator Bombers until the Japanese surrendered . They were then used to transport released Prisoners of War Back Home.
Nils was discharged from the RAAF on 6 June 1946. ?n Demobilization", he held the rank of Leading Aircraftman from the 21 Squadron, aged 22. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War Medal 1939-45, Australian Service Medal 1939-45 and the Returned from Active Service Badge
Nils returned home from WWII unharmed, but ironically at the age of 26, in early 1951, he had a fatal boating accident near Cronulla.
The story goes that he and a mate, Bob Waterford saw a 29 foot whaler cutter with engine, advertised for sale at Gunnamatta Bay. On Saturday, they had planned to go and look at it together, but for some reason Bob didn't make it. Nils purchased the boat on the spot, but made the fatal decision of sailing it around to the Georges River by himself on the very same day. He was warned about heavy seas, but never the less headed out to sea. But instead of sailing north, as planned, was blown by a squall onto the treacherous Jibbon Bomborah, just of the coast of Bundeena.
Nils body was never found, wreckage from the cutter was strewn along the coastline. He was only 26 years old. | Isaksen, Nils William (I6286)
