  • Notes
    • Gladys was delivered by her grandmother, Sarah Tiller. One of Gladys' earliest memories was when her grandfather Richard Tiller died in 1908. His funeral was conducted from his home "Grace House" and as his coffin was brought outside the mourners sang "Rock of Ages Cleft for Me". Gladys left the farm and settle at Owen with her parents on a new farm called "Wilderness" in 1905. She attended school at Owen Primary. She was a foundation member of the Owen Methodist Ladies' Guild which commenced in 1921. Church activities played an important part in Gladys' life.
After they married Gladys and Les moved to Lameroo and as Gladys says "Things were tough then; we used to cart cream and eggs to the station once a week to catch the train for market, Eggs were 4.5 pence a dozen and cream only a few pence a pound, but we made the most of it."
Later Les and Gladys moved to Murray Bridge where Les went into the munition work until the war ended. Motor work was Les' next trade so they moved to Adelaide until he retired in 1969. In 1977 Les and Gladys celebrated 50 years of marriage with many relatives attending a family gathering held in their Honour.
They did not have any children but loved receiving visits from their numerous nieces and nephews. Auntie Glad was everyone's favourite aunt and she made people welcome in her home. She was very house proud. She also kept her garden immaculate.
Gladys attended the West Croydon Church. Unfortunately Les suffered a stroke in 1981, but managed to recover to lead a lifestyle that was as normal as possible. In April 1987 they celebrated 60 years of marriage at the home of their niece Betty Anderson at Lockley s. Gladys suffered from a heart attack in 1989 and they were forced to sell their home and move into the Wesley House Nursing Home. Les still resides there and enjoys visits from the family.
Gladys will be remembered as a kind and gentle lady with ability to cope with many difficulties during her life. (The Tucker Family in Australia, 1992)
