  • Notes
    • Reta was born on Wednesday 13/12/1911 at home in Mallala, a doctor attended the birth, the first time Eliza had more than a local midwife. Richard collected him and drove him to the farm with a horse and sulky.
Joyce grew up on the farm, attending school at Mallala, Mr Georg Morphett being headmaster. Farmers' wives and daughters worked milking cows and raising poultry, thus providing money for household expenses. Separating of the milk twice daily, the delivery of cream either to the railway station or to Taylor's Collection Service (Cream Factory at Gawler) and collecting empty cans a few days later, was normal part of life. The cleaning of the cans and separator also took many hours.
After the marriage of her brother Sid in 1936, Joyce moved with her parents into the township of Mallala. Within four years both Richard and Eliza died and Joyce decided to take a business course in the city in preparation for employment. After training she held several positions and in 1950/51 she spent a year in New Zealand enjoying a working holiday.
After returning to South Australia she worked in the Accounting Department of Australian National Airlines ( afterward amalgamated with Ansett s). Early in 1956 Joyce and a friend spent three years in England on a working holiday, with side trips to Europe and returning to Australia via Canada, USA and New Zealand.
She returned to Airlines Accounting but with T.A.A. (now Australian Airlines) and retired 13 years later. Her work had enabled her to gratify her love of travelling. Joyce has always been i8nterested in the Methodist Church (now Uniting Church) and has held various position. At Mallala she was organist for a number of years. choir member and Sunday School teacher. At St John's Prospect North she was a choir member, Sunday School teacher, member of the Girls' Comradeship, Elder, Secretary of the Women's Fellowship and did floral arrangements for church services. She has been a volunteer helper at the Helping Hand Centre for the past 11 years.
Her interests include dressmaking, photography, pen-friends, C.W.A. (Country Womens Association), Singing, choir, Enfield C.W.A. choir which entertains Nursing Home residents and Senior Citizens' Clubs. She is now a resident at the Helping Hand Centre, North Adelaid.
