- John Michael Hefferan aged 57 years, was buried alive beneath a subsidence of coal on the British freighter, Millais, which was alongside the wharf at Jones Bay, Pyrmont, New South Wales, Australia, whilst engaged in loading operations. He was engaged in trimming the coal as it reached the hold of the vessel in the chute. Suddenly the coal began to fall upon him from both sides, He dashed for safety but was overwhelmed. Members of the crew of the vessel started to dig him out, but it was a dangerous job for at any moment there was a likelihood of a further fall of coal. Gradually the coal was removed. It was nearly six hours until John's body was found. He had suffocated almost immediately after the fall took place. [4]
