Notes |
- Mary Cummins (n. Griffiths) recalls:
Dad, on 14 May 1941 enlisted in the Australian Army as a Gunner in the 7 Field Regiment, unfortunatley he really wanted to serve his country but, officials thought different and on 5 January 1942 he was discharged from the Army and told he was to go into Transport.
He was a conductor on the Trams and buses for many years, he then became a bus driver. He remained, the rest of his career as a bus driver, going from North Sydney Depot ending at Willoughby Depot.
I remember when he was a conductor, we lived at Neutral Bay at the time, kids being kids, we would play conductors ourselves and use up his tickets, unaware that he had to pay for the ones we used. He would then give us the butts and we were alowed to play with them.
From 1942 - 1958 we all lived at 93 Young Street, Neutral Bay. It was a semi-detached house.
We then moved to 18 Cook Street, North Ryde. The children were all married from this house.
Dad had a massive stroke on Easter Sunday 1984, and was placed into a nursing home. Mary and Norm would take Dad out from time to time, either for family parties, or to give Mum (Mary) a surprise or just take Mum and Dad for a drive.
Dad's favourite beach was Queenscliffe, we spent every Sunday at that beach with him from as far back as I (Mary Jnr) can remember. Dad could not swim at all, he used to let the waves break over him, then he would come back to the shore and le in the sand - we used to call him a crumbed sausage. His head would be in the shade of the umbrella and the rest of his body was in the sun. He married MARY CATHERINE MURPHY #14, 24 Jan 1942 in St Declan's Penshurst, New South Wales, Australia, b. 6 Aug 1923 in Lithgow Street, St Leonards, New South Wales, Australia (daughter of JOHN JAMES MURPHY and HELEN (NELLIE) WULF).
