Notes |
- John was sometimes called 'Jack'. He carted slabs of slate from Mintaro for the dining room floor of the farmhouse. In summer he used to take the family for a special treat to the Scilly Hills where they bought honey and apples, picked almonds from the side of the road. John slipped the name "May" into his daughter's names "Edna Mary" when he registered the birth. He was an Elder of the Church of Christ, Balaklava. His favourite psalm was psalm 23. He loved roses, especially fully blown ones. The farm was always full of people, some staying for long periods for convalescence. Victor Harbour was the favourite holiday spot, each year.
Once he lost a wheel from his Model T Ford when he and his daughter Edna were going into Balaklava and it bounced right across the road and over the fence into the Bigg's crop of wheat. He retired In Balaklava after Curt and Hazel married. He died from nephitis at home, nursed by his wife and daughter. (The Tucker Family in Australia, 1992)
NOTICE FROM A PAPER CUTTING:
"DANCES'
"Dancing enthusiasts have little to complain of a lack of dances, lately. Quite a number have been held in Balaklava and nearby, and several more are to eventuate shortly, in aid of the Queen of Children (Miss Barbara McArthur) in connection with the forthcoming "Back to Balaklava Celebrations. A successful little dance was held in Mr J.C. Tucker's Barn on Monday night last, October 17th 19.. Many cars conveyed patrons to the scene of the function, about 12 miles from Balaklava. The attendance was very good, the surrounding districts being well represented. Takings amounted to nearly 7 pounds a very creditable amount, in view of the smallness of the barn. The bulk of the preparatory work was don by Mrs J.C. Tucker and Miss Edna Tucker and Mrs D. and Miss Barbara McArthur. The whole of the magnificent supper was made by these ladies and was a credit to them. The Barn floor had been well polished and a row of wheat bags two high formed seats around the walls and streamers of various colours were hung from the ceiling. Music was provided by Misses Edna Tucker, Barbara McArthur, and M. Liersch (piano) and Mr T Anders (mandolin). Supper was served in the home of Mr & Mrs J. C. Tucker and was much appreciated. After supper, Mr J.J. Flounders Chairman of the Back to Balaklava Committee thanked those present for their attendance and paid tribute to the wonderful work done by Mr & Mrs Tucker on behalf of the Queen of Children. Novelty dances were won by Mr F Wathurst and Miss D Long, Mr D Dick and Miss C Belling and Mr C Spillane and Miss S Wills, Mr Wilson was M.C. dancing continued until 2 am.
(Later Barbara McArthur - Long - was Mayoress of Clare for many years) (The Tucker Family in Australia, 1992)
