Notes |
- Mary was the first child of Eliza and Joseph Clarke to be born in a hospital, and she weighed only 2.5 pounds at birth. She started school at Croydon Primary, later transferring to the Kybunga School in 1914. Mary had been the lucky member of the family to travel to England with her parents in 1911, when they went to see the Coronation of George V, in London on 22nd June, 1911. After leaving school, Mary worked some of her time on the farm at Kybunga, and often boarded with her sister (Daisy Sulley) at Croydon, where she would work at Brookers Jam Factory, situated at the end of the street where her sister lived. She met her husband when he was working for a local farmer at Kybunga (Jock Mitchell). After their marriage harry Joined the Railways and was posted to Tailem Bend. The couple lived there all of their married life, in a Railways house provided for employees. There were no children.
60th birthday for Former Kybunga Lady
A 60th birthday party was tendered Mrs Harry Gray of Tailem Bend, formerly Mary Clarke, who was for many years a resident of Kybunga at the home of her Brother F.J.W. Clarke on Sunday June 25th. A smorgasbord luncheon had been prepared by relatives and friends and was thoroughly enjoyed. Many came from long distances to help celebrate the occasion. In the afternoon her many friends renewed acquaintances and many old-time reminiscences were exchanged. Mrs Kevin Clarke showed many slides that had been taken at her wedding, and places of interest they had visited. During afternoon tea, Mr. Wilfred Clarke, asked the guest of honour to light the candles and cut the cake which had been made and iced by her Neice Mrs. Audrey Sulley of Croydon Park, when the gathering wished her "Happy Birthday" with the singing of the birthday song. Mr Jack Clarke on behalf of the family made her the presentation of a travelling rug and asked her to accept the many gifts that had been made to her to mark the occasion. Mrs Gray suitably responded, thanking all who had made her birthday such a happy occasion. (The Tucker Family in Australia, 1992)
