  • Notes
    • Charles was a fond father and well-read man. He once challenged his sons to find a word he could not spell and he would give them a shilling! But they could never find one. He also played the violin. He had never seen anyone play one and so held it rather strangely: against his chest. He taught himself to play and often played for dances. He was killed on the farm when a horse he was tending in the stall was frightened by a chicken. The horse reared and landed with both hooves on Charles's head.

REGISTER March 31 1919 FATAL KICK FROM HORSE; PORT PIRIE March 28

Mr Charles Henley Smith, a prominent farmer of the Warnertown District aged 48 years while standing beside an unbroken horse, was kicked in the lower part of the head by the animal. He was conveyed to the Port Pirie Hospital where he died on Thursday. The deceased was a son of the late Mr John Smith of Warnertown. In addition to a widow, the late Mr Smith left two (there were actually three) sons. He was a prominent member of the Methodist Church, and an enthusiastic lover of sports. He was also a prominent member of Warnertown Branch of the Liberal Union, of which for some time he occupied the position of secretary.

      DEATH NOTICE: 31/3/1919

Smith: On 27th March at Port Pirie Hospital, result of accident, Charles Henley loving husband of Lily May and father of Cedric, Leo and Rex and the eldest son of Mrs John Smith Warnertown aged 48, Peace Perfect Peace.

Lilly then came to Adelaid to live. The twins had come down to school previously and Sid was left to manage the farm. Later it was sold to Percy Davies. Sid's brother-in-law who lived on the farm immediately behind. Perc still lives there.

The Smith Family (Charles sen. and Sophia - ne Quaife) migrated from Cranbrook, Kent in 1839 on the "Singapore". Both his parents and his idiot brother were dead and his sister had already married his wife's brother and migrated to Australia. These two (Rev. Barzillai and Maria Quaife) sponsored Charles and Sophia. There was therefore little to keep him in England. However he left behind three sisters. Charles sen. was a butcher in Currie Street and then took up land at Reynella. Their young daughter Sophia died soon after they arrived and was buried at Holy Trinity. His son Joh was a very sick man and went north possibly in search of a drier climate and settled in Warnertown in the 1870's. The property was know as "Hillsview". John was very ill and died about a year after they arrived; he would not even have seen his first crop harvested and would have had difficulty clearing the land site. The outdoor stone storage tank (mentioned in the stories) still exists, not far from the old house site. The "new" house is not very different today from what it was when it was first built by Charles jnr. As a child Charles jnr would have had to grow up very quickly to help his mother. Sarah Jane Smith (nee Henley), with the farm. Later he and Lilly farmed the property for his mother.

The Smith story is told in the book "They who came from the colonists" by Gwenda Mann, a copy of which may be found in the South Australian Genealogy Society Library, but the John Smith branch has been omitted. Details of this family are available from the author of that book o9r from the compiler of this book. The Henley story is being written by Royce Mew of Broken Hill (The Tucker Family in Australia, 1992)
