Notes |
- On the 12th December 1844, Stewart's grandfather, Henry Neal age 28, his wife Mary - age 25 and children, Robert 6 years, Steward 4y and Martha just eight months old, from Ballyhaise, Cavan Co Ireland, sailed from Liverpool, England, aboard the "Elizabeth".
The ship arrived in Botany Bay, Sydney on 31 march 1845, with 300 bounty emigrants and 90 children, after not touching land for 100 days. The "Elizabeth" sailed direct, coming around Van Diemen's Land.
Sadly, Stewart's grandmother Mary died at sea and enquiries have failed to find out where, although her probate is listed in Sydney. She was in good health when she boarded in Liverpool.
This branch of the family descends from Rober Neal, who dropped the "E" from his surname, (originally "Neale") b 1840 in Cavan Co, Ireland.
On the 10 Jul 1865 robert Married Eliza Jackson (born in Nothinghamshire, England in 1844 and Eliza was 10 yo when she came to Sydney). Robert and Eliza had 10 children. Stewart was the 6th child and born on 8th September 1878 at Parramatta.
The family moved to 10 Campbell Street Alexandria. When Stewart was 12 years old, his father Robert aged 50 died on 22 Aug 1890, cause of death phthisis, Exhaustion.
On the 1st January 1896, Stewart's younger brother Robert aged 12 died of injuries received by being jammed against the rails of a bridge by the wheel of a trolley. Both his father and brother are buried at St Peters Cemetery.
The Bottcher family moved in next door at 8 Campbell Street sometime before July 1892 when Frederick was born.
Stewart had darkish hair, tall with a slim build. He was called "Lucky" as he did boxing in his younger years for extra money.
Around 1914-15 Stewart, Mary and their family moved to Goulburn where Stewart obtained work at the Noaralen lime pits. Stewart's sister Elizabeth already was living near Goulburn in Malrulan with her husband George Feltham and their 6 children.
Another Sister, Mary Jane had remarried to
Robert bell and also resided in the Goulburn area.
Another of Stewart's sisters, Martha, lost her 19 year old son Robert Alexander in WW1, he died of woulds whilst a prison of war at Bullicourt, in Germany on 25 Apr 1917. The second son of Martha,
Clarence died on 1 May 1942 at sea on HMAS Perth. Clarence was married to Annie Mary Hardy and his occupation was Pearl Diver in Broome WA.
By the end of 1917, Stewart and Mary returned to Sydney with their children. They took up residence at St Peters. it was here that their 11th child Arthur died at the age of 11 months.
Stewart worked in the brick pits and later delivered bricks to the new Terrace houses.
Stewart also worked as a Teamster (his father, Robert was a horse trainer/Teamster). Stewart was a good hard working man. He was awarded a bell for leading the best team of draught horses, it is still within the family.
On 20 July 1927 Stewart's Mother Eliza died of heart failure aged 83.
At the age of 50 Stewart was admitted to Canterbury hospital with a hernia. Whilst there, doctors found he had "honey combed" lungs and he was placed on a pension.
Using his sulky and horse Bessie,He took up lighter work with a farrier friend of his at punchbowl, collecting and returning horses.
Stewart Neal died on the 20th October 1956 after suffering with throat cancer. At the time of his death he resided at 7 Belgium Street Herne Bay (Riverwood).
