Notes |
- Robert Neal is the fourth child of Stewart and Mary Neal (n.Bottcher). He was born on the 22nd November 1905 at Waterloo, New South Wales, Australia. He met and lived with Mary Ann O'Brian (Hickey) at Terry St, St Peters, where Marie was born. Two years later Bobby was born in the Paddington Hospital.
In 1931 they were living at 47 Station St Tempe and Robert had a job at Cooks River where he had to work in the rain. He fell sick and in September 1931 he was admitted to the Coast Hospital at Little bay with Pneumonia and Double empyema, a life threatening condition which is a secondary infection in the lung.
His mother Mary, along with little Marie drove by horse and sulky daily from St Peters to Little Bay to visit. The last time they seen him, he seemed to be improving, but they had hardly arrived home when the police arrived with the tragic news that he had died. A Message was sent to Joe Hanna who rode his push bike (13km)on rough dirt roads back to the hospital. Robert died 34 days after being admitted to hospital on the 21 Oct 1931. he was age 25.
He was buried the next day at Rookwood Church of England Cemetery. Marie was 2 and Bobby was 6 weeks old.
After Roberts death, Mary Anne was not in the position to care for the children so she decided to hand them over to State care. Fearing that they might be put up for adoption and separated, their grand parents Stewart and Mary Neal took over their care.
When Marie was 11yrs old, her mother, Mary came to visit the children. She gave Marie a pretty watch and Bobby a nice big book. That was the last time the children saw their mother.
In 1944 Stewart and Mary Neal legally adopted their grandchildren, Marie and Bobby.
