Notes |
- Cecil Alfred Arthur Faint born 15 Jan 1910 at Gundagai New South Wales. He was the husband of Alma Rose Neal and they were married on 25th January 1930 at St Peters. He did compulsory military service in 1929 and on the 22nd May 1941 at the age of 31 enlisted in the RAAF as a motor Transport driver. His address at the time of enlistment was 50 Tramway Street Mascot New South Wales.
On 1.3.1942 he was posted to Darwin and remained their during the Japanese Air Attacks. He also served at Parkes, Tocumwall Orange and Port Moresby.
On the 10th March 1944 he embarked from Australia for Morotai and joined the 14 Repair and Servicing Unit on Morotai. The Australian Airfield Construction Squadrons were known as "The Flying Shovels".
The Morotai airfield operation was clearly crucial, for its bases would permit the RAAF to support the planned landings. Three Battalions arrived earlier and their camp site consisted mainly off foxholes. The inevitable rain soon began. It developed at once that for more material then usual would have to be removed. Then Morotai coral proved unexpectedly hard, thus aggravating the hauling problem when there were already too few vehicles.
On 1st January 1945 Cecil was promoted to Sargeant.
One of the battalion commanders afterwards wrote that almost all the details ahd been irritating. Nails for example, were almost unobtainable. They had continuous, infuriating mechanical and technical problems. In addition to the usual sicness, sprains and back injuries, the men had suffered particularly from skin disorders on Morotai.
Yet, he added that the construction on Morotai had been carefully controlled and directed and that a good spirit had prevailed. Morotai acquired the reputation of being the most efficient engineering job ever conducted tin the South West Pacific Area to that date.
He was discharged from the RAAF on the 5th December 1945
Cecil died on the 22nd September 1995, late of San Remo New South Wales, aged 85 years
