- For some reason, which is unknown, John William Potts did not use his first Christian name of John and before his marriage, was known as William Potts. So I will use the brackets (John) to distinguish him from the first William in the family.
(John) William Potts was born at Richmond New South Wales on 1 April 1850. He lived with his family in New South Wales at Richmond, Bathurst and the Mudgee District.
On 10th June 1873, at the age of 23 he married Harriet Milton and they had a total of 13 children.
(John) William Potts had a property at Gordon's Gully, Botobolar, near Mudgee and lived there his entire life. The property joined "Havilah", which was owned by a man call Hunter White. Gordon's Gully had beautiful natural spring water.
(John) William Potts died at Mudgee on 10 March 1931 aged 81 years, a copy of his death certificate, in the name of William John Potts is attached.
One could say that (John) William and Harriet Potts were part of establishing the Potts name in the Mudgee district. Properties at Botobolar, Hayes Gap and Gora, all near Mudgee were in the Potts name for over 100 years. A report in the Mudgee newspaper, reported that a gravestone dated 1888 had been found in a paddock at Botobolar with the name Potts on it.
