  • Notes
    • Something odd has happened, it appears that John Duffield has changed his name from "Duffield" to "Hole". His Christening records show him as "John Duffield" son of Dorothy Duffield, no father listed. His marriage to Lydia Bidgood is recorded as John Duffield. The birth of his first and second children "Elizabeth" and "John" are recorded as "Duffield" parents John and Lydia Duffield. But the birth of his third and fourth children "Lydia" and "William" are record as "Hole" and parents as John and Lydia "Hole". The burial records of John and Lydia are recorded as "John Duffield Hole" and "Lydia Hole".
The name change appears to happen somewhere between the birth of his second child John and Third child Lydia, in other words between 1797 and 1799. This is also about the time he moved from Exeter to Plymouth.

Another interesting thing is that John Duffield has been made a Freeman of Exeter on 18 June 1818 - the notation states that he was a apprentice of John Hole. A John Hole was buried on 23rd March 1813 at St Pancras, Exeter, Devon, England. It is quiet possible that John Duffield succeeded this John Hole (his master) as a freeman.

On the 12 Jun 1826 John Hole Duffield was made a Freeman of Exeter on Succession, this means he replaced his father who died in June 1821. If you look at both these entries there appears to be approx the same time between the death of the Freeman until an appointment to replace them has been made.

This is more than likely the reason of the name change to Hole. Whether John Hole was the real father of John Duffield (1775) or whether he had adopted or fostered him as a child, we will never know. We can only wonder and I place this bit of information for everyone to ponder on and draw your own conclusions.

I have also found a marriage between John Hole and Elizabeth Towler 07 Sep 1762 at St Olave, Exeter, Devon England. Remember Johns First two children were named Elizabeth and John, something else to think about considering his birth mother was Dorothy, no Dorothy in the childrens names.
